Leon Wildes, founder of Wildes & Weinberg
Leon Wildes · 1933–2024 · Founder

The Founder

It began with one man.

In 1960, a young New York attorney named Leon Wildes opened a practice defending individuals against deportation. He would become the dean of American immigration law — National President of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, a beloved professor at Cardozo for over four decades, and the lawyer who took on the United States government to keep John Lennon in America.

Sixty-five years later, his firm spans six offices and forty professionals — but it is still built on the standard he set on the very first day: individualized attention to every client's problem.

The Case That Made History

We kept John Lennon
in America.

Leon Wildes with John Lennon & Yoko Ono · New York, 1970s

He was one of the most famous musicians who ever lived — and the Nixon administration wanted him gone. Between 1972 and 1976, Leon Wildes fought back through four federal lawsuits, exposed the political misuse of immigration law, and won.

“The most bitterly contested and influential deportation case in United States history.”
